GM Talent Match legacy – New support programme for hidden young people announced

Greater Manchester Centre for Voluntary Organisation (GMCVO) has secured funding to deliver the Greater Manchester Talent Match Hidden Young People programme.

GMCVO were the lead partner in the original Greater Manchester Talent Match partnership, part of a national, five-year Big Lottery-funded programme which supported young people furthest from employment, and will oversee the direction of this exciting new project.
Funded by £500,000 from the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities Fund and £300,000 from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), the new programme will work exclusively with hidden young people.

These are young people who are not employed, not in education or training, and not claiming the benefits to which they are entitled.

Because they do not claim, hidden young people are excluded from mainstream employment support. Research by GM Talent Match in 2018 suggested that there are over 21,000 hidden young people in Greater Manchester and over 25% of GM Talent Match beneficiaries were hidden.

The new two-year programme will provide holistic key worker support to hidden young people, helping them progress towards employment whilst improving their self-esteem, confidence and wellbeing. It will also work with employers to help them understand the barriers faced by young people and how to attract, retain and develop young talent.

Funding from the Big Lottery focuses on supporting young people in Bolton, Manchester and Salford – areas with high levels of youth unemployment and large numbers of hidden young people – whilst the financing from GMCA enables support to be delivered across the whole of Greater Manchester.

Other key partners involved in the new programme include local authorities, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Greater Manchester Youth Network, The Co-Operative Group, Addleshaw Goddard, 42nd Street, The Broughton Trust, Bolton Lads and Girls Club, Manchester Young Lives, Upturn Enterprise, Reform Radio, Stockport Homes and G-Force

Delivery of Greater Manchester Talent Match Hidden Young People is anticipated to start in Spring 2019.
